Classmates, Alums and Friends of Dartmouth,
The legend of Dartmouth Winter CarniVAILTM continues to grow... Attendance over the weekend topped 150 for the first time... A photo image of the
100 or so who made it to our group photo op on Friday morning is attached.... Certainly, this was the largest gathering
of Dartmouth alumni and friends on a ski mountain anywhere in the world outside of New England.
The weather was fantastic.... Sun, blue skies and great temperatures.... The slopes were groomed
to perfection by Vail's Mountain staff.... The Dartmouth group was fully recognized by messages on lift boards, the
local Vail Daily Newspaper and Cable Channel 8... Many folks in Vail are now more familiar with Dartmouth's critical historical connection
to skiing, the 10th Mountain Division and the creation of the Vail Ski Mountain, the greatest place to ski in North America...
Our Friday morning start was as chaotic as ever with our effort to capture an image at the Vista Bahn of
the "record setting" early starters ready to take to the slopes, the Friday lunch in MidVail at Sarge's Shelter,
named after former Dartmouth ROTC head Sgt. Bill Brown, provided opportunities for all the Classes to mix, and the Friday cocktail
party at the Sonnenalp was a great way to close out Day One. During the balance of the weekend, various groups skied
Vail or other nearby mountains, and held dinners and other gatherings.
Special kudos are due to Bob Downey '58, his amazing Keystone Reunion group with some 75 participants,
and the many who came over to join us to ski in Vail on Friday, particularly Walter Vail '58; the several lovely ladies
gathered from the Class of 1993; the '68 Ski Reunion members who stopped by on their way to Telluride; the 25 or
so members of the Classes of '53 and '54 who gathered on Friday and Saturday; and the 30 or so participants in the 3 day 1965
Mini-Reunion extravaganza which featured a moonlight sleigh ride, a classy magic show by world renowned magician,
Rich Bloch '65, and a "First on the Mountain" ski event at dawn on Sunday morning, courtesy of Vail Resorts and
the Game Creek Club.
Special "thanks" to Vail Resorts management (President Bill Jensen, Sales Representatives Meg Ogden & Liz
Herr, and the Mountain Staff), the Game Creek Club (Lita Hitchcock, Elizabeth Nilsson and the GCC staff), the Gorsuch
Store (Dave Gorsuch and his ski staff), Channel 8 (Tricia Swenson) and the Vail Daily for their help in planning and
executing this wonderful weekend.
And mark your calendar now to participate in this very special Dartmouth tradition at the 5th
annual Dartmouth Winter CarniVAILtm next year.....
March 2-4,2007 We have some very unique event plans already in the works...
