Hi Guys...
Re: Class of 1965 Mini-Reunion in Vail
Colorado, March 3-7, 2005
Thanks to Rick Davey, I have attached a photo
of some of the mighty 1965 skiers who ventured on to Vail Mountain March 3-7, 2005... And what a weekend it was!....
During the Mini Reunion, we had attendance
by Roger and Nancy Hansen; Jim and Debbie Griffiths; Tom and Dianne Campbell; Bill Webster; Ted and Marcia Atkinson; Marshall
and Diane Wallach; Tucky and Gabriella Mays; Rick Davey and friend Susan; Ron Riley; Norm, Ellen and Jay Christianson; and
Steve and Linda Waterhouse plus Maureen and Steve Cheheyl '67. We also heard from Hank Amon, Carl Boe, Dick Durrance,
Jim Aitken and Matt Morrison who were interested, but unable to make the event.
On Thursday night, to start things off, we
all enjoyed Linda's cooking at our house in Vail Village with some wonderful wine supplied by our Master Vintners, Norm and
Ellen Christianson, owners of Colorado's "Number One" vineyard, Canyon Wind in Palisades, Colorado. We had a great evening
catching up on past activities and getting our plans fine tuned for the next three days....
Then on Friday morning, we participated in
the greatest gathering of Dartmouth grads, wives and friends skiing on one mountain outside of New England....
Over 100 Dartmouthites gathered together to set an "All Time Dartmouth Record." This included folks from the Dartmouth
Club of the Vail Region; our mini reunion group and similar groups from the Classes of '60, '58, '54 and Tuck; plus some 30
participants from Bob Downey '58's Annual Ski Weekend group gathered at nearby Keystone Mountain who made the 30 mile trip
over to Vail just to help us set the record; and miscellaneous others. Over 72 even made it to the 9:15 AM photo shoot
at the Vista Bahn lift. After a great ski day with lunch at Vail's unique Game Creek Club, we gathered with 60 other
Dartmouthites at a cocktail party at the Sonnenalp Hotel. We followed this with a great dinner at the Sonnenalp's Bully
Pub.
On Saturday, we were led on to the ski slopes
by one of Vail's most experienced Ski Instructors, Gerry Huttrer '60, who gave some individual ski advice as well as taking
us to some of Vail's great runs in the magical Blue Sky Basin area. On Saturday night, our ever aggressive crew snow
shoed under the light of the stars and had dinner at the Blue Moon Cafe, all on top of Vail Mountain! On Sunday, Steve
Waterhouse played mountain tour guide, leading the '65 ski team to new and distant runs in China Bowl, Sun Up Bowl and Sun
Down Bowl. Dinner was held at the hot new Vail restaurant, Kelly Liken's.
As this event has developed over the past five
years, we have rekindled some of our skiing interests and shared many new Dartmouth experiences. We have also seen some
significant improvement in skills. Tom Campbell gained general recognition as most improved skier this weekend, but
everyone's skills are noticeably better. Ted Atkinson showed off his finely developed skills in snow shoeing and what
the proper dress for this sport is! And young Jay Christianson impressed all of us with his ability to ski and mix with
us old folk.... It is kind of nice to still be able to improve one's physical skills even at our advancing ages!
We hope to see everyone again in June at the
40th Reunion!
Best regards,
Steve Waterhouse
