SPOTLIGHT ON

Russell Carson  '65

General Partner
Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe

New York, New York

Elected 1999 (Charter Trustee)
A.B. Dartmouth College
M.B.A. Columbia Business School

Born in 1943 Russell Carson attended public high school in Toledo, Ohio, prior to receiving an A.B. degree in economics from Dartmouth College in 1965 and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School in 1967. Since 1978 Mr. Carson has been a General Partner of Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe (WCAS), one of the countrys largest private investment firms, which he co-founded. Over the past 21 years, WCAS has raised twelve institutionally funded limited partnerships with total capital of $12 billion and has invested in more than 200 companies. The firm has evolved into the leading specialist in the buyout of privately owned companies in the information services, telecommunications, and healthcare industries. Unlike many buyout firms, WCAS emphasizes the growth of acquired businesses and ultimately seeks its financial returns through access to the public stock market. Mr. Carson has led WCASs healthcare investment activities and is currently a director of five portfolio companies including three public companies U.S. Oncology, Inc., Select Medical, Inc., and Triad Hospitals, Inc. From 1967 to 1978 he was employed by the Citicorp Venture Capital subsidiary of Citicorp and served as its Chairman and CEO from 1974 to 1978. Active in community affairs, Mr. Carson is Vice Chairman of The Rockefeller University Board of Trustees, Chairman of the Board of Overseers of Columbia Business School, a Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a Director of the New York City Investment Fund, and Chairman of the Inner-City Scholarship Endowment Fund. He resides in New York City with his wife Judy and their two children.

Bio From Dartmouth Trustee Site

Ed Keible checked in from the Sunshine state (there are, incidentally, about 40" of snow on the ground in Hanover right now).  Read this and much more in January '03's Boots 'n Beanie  Bob Murphy, Newsleter Editor

"On the 12th of October, Bob and French McConnaughy were in California touring, largely by bicycle. It was French's first ever trip to the Golden State. We met with them for a Saturday and among other things had the pleasure of touring Stanford and the Rodin sculpture garden there. I have attached two photos of that day, one in front of Stanford Chapel and one in the Rodin Garden. Additionally we went to the Stanford Washington State football game to see Dartmouth own Buddy Teevan's new team. Unfortunately for Buddy, WSU was ranked 8th in the country at that time and looked it. But unlike Hanover this past weekend, seeing Buddy's Stanford team defeated was a little easier given that it was 75 degrees with the sun shining!"

Regards, Ed Keible
