Thomas W. Mitchell
Thomas Mitchell died Thursday, April 20, 2006, at his home in Shrewsbury,
Vermont after a 13-month battle with myelogenous leukemia. Tom was born in New York City and came to Dartmouth from Lenox School in Lenox, Massachusetts.
He was editor-in-chief of the campus magazine, Greensleeves, and graduated
with a degree in philosophy. After graduation he served in the Peace Corps in Columbia
from 1965 to 1968, where he met his first wife, Theresa Motyka, whom he married in 1970.
Tom was extremely active in community affairs, including the Shrewsbury
Volunteer Fire Department, disaster relief, energy and environmental conservation, serving as town constable for ten years, and as Boy Scoutmaster. He enjoyed music, singing and playing guitar
and other instruments with local groups.
He put his knowledge of Spanish language and Latin American music
and culture to work with leadership of a group of Vermont teenagers to Mexico for
the Hayes Foundation and served as a translator for the Cuban Medical Transport in 2005.
According to friends and family, Tom had an insatiable curiosity for
the world around him. He loved learning and spent many years throughout his life as a teacher and
tutor.
He was a talented photographer and an incorrigible prankster.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Vanneman and children Christopher
and Andrew Mitchell and Amanda Pagan, their mother, his first wife Theresa Mitchell, his sister and mother.
